Health care and health insurance are incredibly complicated areas of our economy and public policy. It doesn’t have to be so complex, but this “system” is what past elected and private-sector leaders have created for us. So let’s make the most of it…
When it comes to finding affordable, quality coverage and care, MNsure isn’t the problem. Rather, our country’s expensive individual market and underlying cost drivers have created a crisis for many Minnesotans.
Both as a member of the MN State Senate and as a small business owner, Matt Schmit has been focused on this issue and has the right prescription:
- Supplemental tax credits available through our state-based exchange to make monthly premiums more affordable for all Minnesotans immediately;
- Expanded eligibility to allow individuals and families to buy into state plans currently available to working Minnesotans and state employees;
- Market stabilization and reinsurance that provides risk assurance, premium stability, and private insurer accountability; and
- Redrawn geographic rating area lines separating Minnesota’s expensive southeastern and competitive metro markets.
Matt’s been working with area residents, state policymakers, and experts to make these ideas law and provide the right mix of short-term premium affordability and long-term cost containment and choice.
