Between 2013 and 2016 Matt Schmit served as vice chair of the MN State Senate Agriculture and Rural Development Committee. In this capacity Matt authored successful legislation on various issues, including expanding broadband access for rural Minnesotans, promoting important agritourism opportunities and protections, and creating Minnesota’s “Farm to Food Shelf” program for bringing unused produce to new markets.
In addition, Matt served on the Agricultural Utilization Research Institute (AURA) board and represented the state Senate in state and national agriculture conversations, including service on the Blandin Foundation’s Broadband Strategy board and the national State and Rural Leaders program.
Given the close connection between agriculture and natural resources, Matt enjoyed the opportunity to chair the Senate’s Game and Fish Subcommittee, which oversaw regulation of Minnesota’s rich tradition of hunting, fishing, and trapping. Matt also served on the state Legislative Water Commission, which served as a direct link between the legislature and stakeholders offering input on a wide variety of water-related issues.
Outside the legislature, Matt has been active with organizations such as the Minnesota Farmers Union and Minnesota Grape Growers Association.
